The artist :

Born in 1966 in Douala, Cameroon, Simon Binna « explores and revisits quintessential African themes such as the human figure and the ubiquitous African mask. » At times dense or minimalist, he is continiously playing with the codes, free to use heavy materials or classical paintings, always creating powerful and meaningfull artwork.

François Machado is born in 1979 in France. He is working and living in the south of France. He mainly explores volumes and subjects surrounding us without attracting our attention. That way, the artist creates poetic installations by revealing what we don’t look at, sharing with us a strong artistic work.

A french writter, Elisabeth Couturier, shared some very good words about his work in French, translated here:

« In fact, Machado focus on empties and full which are parts of our environnement. Those through which we circulate, without noticing, without seeing it. Or those, too, that stand in a particular part of our imaginary. »

That way,  in between other projects, the artist is working on a representation (scale: 2/3 millionth), hanging above our heads, of the Méditerranée, or more specifically the contact surface in between water volume and extremities of the earth. A stunning idea.  Then, the non-submerged lands disappear and the water that became solid, presents itself as a physical entity charged of memory :  » We speak, says the artist, about the Mediterranée, we know it, but do we know how it looks like? But do we know how to recognize its form when it is isolated? ». »

« Assadullah Baran Bromand is a contemporary artist born in 1992. He is one of the main members and founders of Berang Arts Organization. Assadullah has participated in many contemporary art exhibitions held by Berang in collaboration with the Goethe Institute of Afghanistan, National Gallery of Afghanistan, French Institute of Afghanistan, and Queen’s Palace (Bagh-e- Babor).

The artist words about the Installation.

// « My project Lie of Freedom consists of 9 Burqas and one Turban, has started in 2011. It exposes and explains the reasons of war and human killing by bringing the memory of people before, during and after civil wars in Afghanistan. (…) «

The artist talks about an international and domestical awareness to have in order to understand and prevent the « wrong realities and missing ideologies ».

« In 2011, I had made a first version of this installation at the in French Cultural Center, Kabul. But The exhibition was closed and I was imprisoned.  In 2013, finally I made this artwork in a place where it should have been installed first-hand: In a destroyed place, which was a military base at the time of Mojahidin on 12th April 2013 from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM in Qambar Hill, Omid-e- Sabz township, Kabul. »

There are not much informations about the biography of the artist online, or about her origins and aspirations. But there is a very interesting article from design boom explaining a part of her work, linked with her may – june 2015 exhibition at the Kickarts Contemporary Arts.

« For the exhibition ‘intimate vestiges’ at kickarts contemporary arts, australia, artist fiona roberts explores the personal and individual nature of the home through a variety of body textures incorporated into traditional household furnishings. abstracted through repetition, pattern and traditional ornamentation, these pieces installed throughout the bedroom installation blur the boundaries between the home and the body, making it difficult to determine where the house ends and where the person begins. »

Traductions par Because Art Is. Translations by Because Art Is.

“The house and the body are palimpsests of life events with their history inscribed into every surface. They are repositories of treasured moments, of everyday routines and memories, of growing up or growing old, of accidents, of habits, and of fear and trauma.

The subjective nature of the home is explored through a variety of body textures that are obscured by pattern, repetition, and traditional ornamentation in household furnishings. This blurs the boundaries between the home and body, making it difficult to determine where the house ends and where the person begins.

The conventional items of the home that generally go unnoticed become the focus of our attention and quietly reveal their personal history”.

Quote from Fiona Roberts about Intimate Vestiges – Citation de Fiona Roberts à propos de Intimate Vestiges.

Above all, Fiona Roberts seems to be one of the rare very strong young artists that might surprise us in the next years and become somehow a reference in Art.

« A celebration of the career of iconic choreographer William Forsythe, as an American working internationally for the last thirty years, Forsythe is recognised as one of the world’s foremost choreographers. His work is celebrated for reorienting the practice of ballet from its identification with classical repertoire into a dynamic 21st-century art form.

Composed of thread and fog, the material work is a score for a delicately sustained solo performance. This installation by William Forsythe is made in collaboration with Philip Bußmann, features a soundtrack by Thom Willems and is performed at the Arko Art Center by Alessio Silvestrin. »

GAY OUTLAW

Born in 1959 in Alabama.

« Outlaw realizes her abstract forms in a challenging mix of materials, from glass to plastic to felt, to found materials like pencils or rubber hoses– at times, she has employed food in her sculptures. Even as a fan of minimalism, she offers viewers new relationships to formal art, taking them beyond its past rigors. »

« The One Thing After Another
Per Kristian Nygaard at KHM Gallery
by Wojciech Olejnik

Per Kristian Nygaard’s exhibition The One Thing After Another explores the influence of social and political ideologies on public and private space, on its material composition, on its architecture. Consider House (2010), a model of a high-rise building constructed out of unfinished plywood. It towers over the viewer like a modernist sculpture, simple and elegant in its design and use of material. Such simplicity marks much modernist city planning and architecture, which seem to embody a bare rationality developed out of a rigorous consideration of the placement and arrangement of objects. This approach involves the implementation of an overarching order, where even ornamentation stems from its very structure, according to an inner logic. House (2010) presents the deduced, bare essentials of such a logic: form and material. Presented as a model it acts as a demonstration of the original design, of the formal concerns that precede the eventual completion of the structure, and in its unpainted state it brings attention to the raw material used in its construction.

It is no secret that in modernist architecture the materials used were often left exposed, that they themselves symbolized new engineering feats, but also represented a new modern age. Nygaard’s work such as Unapologetic Architect II (2010), brings attention to certain forms and shapes that have also been crucial in establishing the modernist aesthetic. This piece is a drawing of an imagined building, which compresses rectangular shapes to form a complex architectural structure, reminiscent of a mall or some other social space. A uniform grid of windows covers the walls and the roof, with steel frames and glass convening in an angular geometric reality of cubes and squares. Unlike a circle or a triangle, the cube is infinitely divisible into the same shape, into equal portions, and thus it may represent equality itself. Here, the clean lines and Lego-like units that define this public place suggest a uniformity of the social body, of its infinite mass, and how its wealth and property can be portioned into discrete, equal yet separate units. »

« Geometries of Nudity: Evelyn Bencicova’s Raw Photography

An emerging young talent from Bratislava, Natalia Evelyn Bencicova (b. 1992) is a promising visual creative whose work explores mixed media with photography. Currently studying in Vienna, she works mostly with digital photography, actively pursuing a point where the commercial and the artistic meet. We talk to Evelyn about her life, art and philosophy.

TCT: Thanks for joining us here, Evelyn. Tell us – what’s your story?

E: In very few words: I want to communicate the things that I see through the medium of photography. With each project I’m trying to bring something new and innovative at least for me, to educate myself and go deeper into the topics which I consider interesting. My life is about getting inspired and my work about delivering this inspiration further.

What do you care about the most when taking photographs?

Most of my work happens before the photoshoot. A journey from the original idea to the final picture is usually very long and complicated in staged photography, which is what I do. It includes concept development, research, production, creative direction, the scouting of faces and locations, styling, hair and make-up plus whole process of organization and communication. Everything is important. Even if I try to cover a large part of this myself, there are a lot of amazing people who always help and support me, first and foremost my close friend Adam Csoka Keller, as well as many others, without whom most of my projects would not have been possible. Normally we work without any budget in very improvised conditions. I believe that most of creativity is born out of discomfort and lack of resources, when you are forced to invent new solutions. Anyway, I would never exchange the exciting and free atmosphere of our shoots for anything else! »
